Sprains and Strains

Sprains and strains are common musculoskeletal injuries that impact ligaments, muscles, or tendons. A sprain involves stretching or tearing a ligament, commonly occurring in areas such as the ankle, knee, or wrist. In contrast, a strain pertains to the overstretching or tearing of muscles or tendons, with the lower back or hamstrings usually being affected. These injuries often arise from sudden twists, falls, overexertion, improper lifting techniques, or lack of proper warm-ups before engaging in physical activities. Sprains and strains can result in long-term weakness, instability, or recurrent injuries if left untreated.

Physical therapy is essential for recovery, helping to alleviate pain, restore mobility, and strengthen the affected region. Initial treatment generally focuses on managing pain and swelling through ice, compression, and elevation alongside therapeutic techniques such as ultrasound or electrical stimulation. Therapists introduce gentle stretching and joint mobilization exercises as healing advances to regain movement. Strengthening routines target the muscles and ligaments around the injury site, enhancing stability and mitigating re-injury risk. Furthermore, balance and proprioception training improves coordination, facilitating a safe return to daily tasks or sports. A comprehensive rehabilitation plan is crucial for a complete recovery and helps diminish the chances of future injuries. If you are experiencing a sprain or strain, pursuing physical therapy can aid your recovery and help you confidently resume your daily activities.
